I thought it was about time I hopped on this bandwagon!

I know it’s only the 6th, but my reading year has been a bit meh thus far. I tend to read a few books at a time, and the ones I picked up were a bit heavy, and I needed something a bit more fun. I had had a conversation with a dear friend of mine about this series earlier in the day, so when Imogen picked up the first book and suggested I read that I took it as a sign.

I know I’m late to this party (I always am) but I have picked up Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. Corey, and it was all I could do last night not to read way past my bedtime. It will also count towards at least on of the prompts for the Swords and Stars challenge. I need to remember that when I’m having a rough time I just damn well need to pick up some sci-fi.
On a personal note, you will no doubt have seen the bush fire emergency Australia is currently experiencing. Lucky for me I am a long way from any of the terrible things that are happening elsewhere in the country. It is devastating to watch the country burn and to see people and animals suffer. While donations of cash are always good, I have been feeling a bit helpless and wanting to do more. Fortunately a couple of my work pals have led me to a group collecting knitted and sewn items to help injured native animals. So I’m going to be knitting up some marsupial pouches and sending them on. I’ve been watching a heap of Aussie authors participating in #AuthorsforFireys over on Twitter which has made my heart swell. It seems that everyone who can is doing something.
Cheers,

I get that – apart from my first book (which was a reread of last year’s favourite book), my reading year has been a bit ‘meh’ so far, too.
I’m glad you’re away from the fires – I am, too, thankfully.
The authors for fireys initiative is just genius. I love it so much.
I’m so proud of our country for this.

I’ve got 3 books on the go at the moment : One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus, Freakboy by Kristin Elizabeth Clark, and Don’t Let Me Go by J.H. Trumble. I just bought the rest of the Expanse series books (half have arrived, but not books 2 and 3 yet) because I want to start reading Leviathan Wakes soon, but didn’t want to wait forever to jump into the sequel. I’m looking forward to your review if you post it.
I have two friends who have lost their homes to the fires, another who transports fresh produce through country NSW and his business and that of the farmers are practically ruined, and my cousin works for the Fireys on the north coast of NSW. The news I get from them is horrific. Every time I see images of sick and injured animals online my heart breaks. We’ve been donating goods and funds to help the cause. When the Peregrine Waters Fires on the Sunshine Coast were blazing new where I live the skies were red and I could barely breathe some days and stayed inside with air filters on. I can’t imagine the conditions some of our fellow Aussies are experiencing right now… but is heartwarming to see the support flooding in and the hard work the fireys are doing to contain the blazes.

I’m so sorry for your friends, and best wishes to your cousin. The fireys are doing such a great job. I don’t think we as a nation have even begun to think or figure out what this has done and is doing to our ability to produce food both now and into the future.

I know, scary. Hopefully it will start to drive innovation and coming together as a country as a result. We are starting to see it with milk supplies, tariffs, tax breaks, and buying local allowing farmers to compete and by-pass large chain manufacturers/distributors; but there is still a long way to go. I like the idea of home/community gardens to help produce our own food and markets to buy local… it’s easier in country area, and only a small part of a solution. But we’re Aussie battlers and will dust ourselves off and keep going!
