Spinning by Tillie Walden is her gorgeous memoir in the form of a graphic novel.

The author of On a Sunbeam talks about her teenage years. They were not easy years – her family is dysfunctional, she spends a lot of time ice skating even though she seems less than enthused about it, and she is in the closet in a homophobic environment.
Walden’s anxiety and depression through these years is evident in her story, and yet her teen self pushes through. She also reflects lovingly on the people in her life who helped her, encouraged her, supported her. I wanted to hug teenage Tillie as she struggled with self acceptance of her sexuality and through her difficult coming out.
I really enjoyed this slice of Walden’s life. Her drawing style is simple, yet is also both elegant and expressive.
